Beautifully crafted, uncomplicated, unpretentious, yet elegant prose and encapsulated in 155 pages. A perfectly formed spare tale, not a wasted word... Superbly translated by Sam Taylor, this haunting little novel will stay with you’ Paul Burke

Beautifully evoked and deeply touching...Mingarelli illustrates the power of small shared moments between pawns of war...Brief flashes of warmth and humour light their blackening sky like shooting stars, eventually fizzing out to leave them engulfed in darkness again. Hilary Mantel called this book "A small miracle"; days after reading it, I would agree’ Jane Graham

Extraordinary... [Mingarelli] has crafted a moving work...The novel has an elemental quality that is entirely right for the pitilessness of war’ David Mills

I am astonished by Four Soldiers. I have never read anything like it, yet it is one of those books you feel must always have existed, a classic of writing about the human condition. Short and deceptively simple, it reads like a message from the unheard, news from unwitnessed lives, building letter by letter to its crushing final page. A small miracle of a book, perfectly imagined and perfectly achievedHilary Mantel

Profound and affecting... In prose so simple and direct it is like the stark landscape surrounding them, Mingarelli leaves as much unspoken as do his characters, letting deeper truths emerge... captivatingAlastair Mabbot

‘A tale that can easily be read in a sitting’ Stephanie Cross

‘Oblique in his facts, spare in his prose, understated and delicate in his emotions, Mingarelli has once again delivered fiction of the highest order. In Sam Taylor's pitch-perfect translation, Four Soldiers resonates like a bell in a winter forest. It is a beautifully sustained work of artCaroline Brothers

‘The French writer Hubert Mingarelli [...] is a master of lyrical restraint... Mingarelli can count himself lucky in having Sm Taylor as his translator in English... Taylor has once again brought to an English-speaking readership a troubling and compelling tale of memory and fragility from a matchless stylistMichael Crown
